Required Training for Working in the Laboratory
Medical Surveillance
The University requires that all users of laboratory animals must undergo an initial health screening. To complete this medical surveillance, take the following steps:
- Download and complete the medical screening form.
- Take the completed form to: Employee Health Services Clinic, 3708 Fifth Ave., Medical Arts Building, Suite 505, Pittsburgh, PA 15213 (between 7:00 am and 3:00pm Monday through Friday).
- If it is impossible to take the form to Employee Health Services, Email the completed Questionnaire to myhealthatworkpitt@upmc.edu .
Animal User Training on the Web
To complete the training, go to the following website: http://cme.hs.pitt.edu.
THEN, click on the "Animal-Based Research Modules" folder (the third from the top).
Complete the following 5 modules (and only these 5). Make sure you take the quizzes associated with the modules and print out the certificate at the end.

- Cat Training Module - Update
- Ferret Training Module-Update
- Controlled Substances
- Use of Laboratory Animals in Research and Education - 2019 Update
Research Integrity Training
A new requirement is the completion of Research Integrity and Conflict of Interest Training via the CITI portal. To complete these modules, follow these steps:
- Next, select the course "Responsible Conduct of Research"
- Once you complete the curriculum selection form, the Responsible Conduct of Research module should be available in your course list. Complete all the required modules associated with this course.
